PEORIA, Ariz. Saying Yu Darvish jersey cheap is “poised to have a great year,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister named him the team’s opening day starter Saturday.
Darvish will face Cleveland on April 3. He will become the Rangers ninth different opening day starter since 2009. No other MLB club has used more than eight in that time.
The announcement has been coming all spring. The Rangers set up their pitching schedule to put Darvish on the path to making the start. It has been coming perhaps longer than that, waylaid by a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow suffered during his first spring start in 2015. It forced him to miss the entire season.
“We feel that he is in a great place,” Banister said. “We have one of the best pitchers in all of baseball opening the season for us. Physically and mentally, he’s just in a tremendous position. He knows what he means to this club. You look at him and see a mentally focused and driven human being who wants to be the best pitcher on the planet.”
Darvish, who started the season opener in Japan five times from 2007 to ’11 while with Hokkaido, was unavailable for comment after the announcement Saturday but is expected to discuss it Sunday.
Banister did not reveal the rest of the rotation, but Cole Hamels jersey cheap is expected to pitch second, with Martin Perez jersey cheap likely to follow him. The Rangers are still debating using a four or five man rotation through the first two weeks of the season but appear to be leaning toward the former.
With Andrew Cashner jersey cheap still working his way back from biceps tendinitis and two off days in the first 10 days of the season, the Rangers can use their first two starters three times April 3 14, all on the usual four days’ rest.
The Rangers have been leaning in this direction all winter. The team went 8 2 in Darvish’s last 10 starts of 2016, during which he compiled a 3.48 ERA and held hitters to a .212 batting average. He struck out 78 and walked 19 while averaging 61/3 innings per start. Hamels had a rougher time down the stretch.
“Yu finished the season throwing 97 mph fastballs with great movement, and the determination, Wholesale Jerseys
he was just driven,” Banister said. “We talked with him at the end of the year about being process driven. It was clear immediately this spring to us. We feel fortunate that we have a 1A and a 1B.”
